Why Fiber Matters
Psyllium Husk, Gut Health, and Cholesterol
The short version

The basics of soluble and insoluble fiber
The two types of fiber you may have heard of are soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fiber mixes with water. Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber that absorbs water and swells into a soft gel.
Many other soluble fibers are more easily broken down - or fermented - by the microbes in your gut.
Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. It generally stays more intact, adds bulk, and helps move things through your digestive system.
These labels are a useful starting point, but they don't tell the whole story. Different soluble fibers can behave very differently once you eat them. Psyllium husk’s biggest impact comes from the the gel it forms.[2]
What psyllium husk does
Psyllium husk — the main source of fiber in Cour — absorbs an impressive amount of water.
Mix it with liquid and it forms a gel. That one simple trick drives several well-studied benefits.
Better, more predictable poops
Psyllium holds on to water as it moves through your gut.
That can soften hard poops, give loose poops more shape and make bathroom trips more regular. Instead of suddenly stimulating your intestines, psyllium helps move your poop toward a more comfortable consistency.
In joint guidelines from the American Gastroenterological Association and American College of Gastroenterology, psyllium was the only fiber supplement studied that clearly appeared effective for chronic constipation—although the researchers noted that the available evidence was limited.[3] (PMC)
Healthy cholesterol support
Your liver uses cholesterol to make bile, a fluid that helps your body digest fat.
Once bile has done its job, your body normally absorbs most of it and sends it back to the liver to be used again. Psyllium husk’s gel can reduce how much of that used bile gets recycled, carrying some of it out of your body instead.
Your liver then needs to make replacement bile. To do that, it pulls cholesterol from your bloodstream.
In plain English:
Psyllium husk carries away some used bile → your liver makes more bile → your liver pulls cholesterol from your blood to do it.
A review of 28 clinical trials found that around 10 grams of psyllium husk per day lowered LDL—the cholesterol often called “bad” cholesterol—by an average of about 13 mg/dL.[4] (PubMed)
Steadier blood-sugar response
When you eat carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into sugar that enters your bloodstream.
Psyllium husk’s gel can slow that process, allowing sugar to enter the blood more gradually instead of all at once.
A 2024 review of 19 clinical trials found that psyllium husk improved fasting blood sugar, long-term blood-sugar levels and insulin resistance. The results do not mean psyllium husk replaces medication or medical care, but they suggest it can be a useful part of a diet that supports healthy blood-sugar control.[5] (PubMed)
Other fibers feed your gut microbes
Psyllium husk works mainly by absorbing water and forming a gel. It is not heavily fermented by the microbes in your gut.
Other fibers — many of them soluble — are much more fermentable. When your gut microbes eat these fibers, they produce useful compounds called short-chain fatty acids, or SCFAs.
One of the most important SCFAs is called butyrate.
Why short-chain fatty acids (SFCA) matter
SCFAs help connect what you eat with the health of your gut.
They feed the cells lining your colon. Butyrate is an important source of energy for the cells that make up the lining of your large intestine.
They help protect the gut barrier. Your gut lining works like a carefully controlled border. It lets nutrients into your bloodstream while helping keep bacteria and other unwanted material inside your digestive system.
When that barrier becomes too porous, scientists call it increased intestinal permeability. You may know it as “leaky gut.” Butyrate helps power the cells that maintain this barrier and supports the proteins that seal those cells together.
They help regulate inflammation. Inflammation is part of your body’s normal defense system, but it needs to turn on and off at the right times. SCFAs communicate with immune cells and help influence the signals that control inflammation.
The process looks like this:
Certain fibers feed gut microbes → the microbes produce SCFAs → SCFAs nourish the colon, support the gut barrier and help regulate inflammation.
The science supports saying that fermentable fibers and the SCFAs they produce help maintain a healthy gut barrier and balanced inflammatory response. It does not mean fiber single-handedly cures “leaky gut” or treats an inflammatory disease.[6] (PubMed)
What about insoluble fiber?
Insoluble fiber stays mostly intact as it moves through your digestive system. It adds bulk and helps move things along.
You will find it in foods including whole grains, vegetables, nuts and the skins of many fruits.
For the broadest benefits, a healthy diet should include a variety of fibers that work in different ways.
The bigger health picture
Scientists have studied fiber in connection with many of the diseases that affect us most.
Most of this research looked at total fiber intake across a person’s overall diet. These studies show strong links, but they do not prove that fiber alone caused the difference — or that Cour prevents disease.
Here is what major studies have found:
- Heart disease: Every additional 7 grams of fiber per day was associated with about a 9% lower risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease.[7] (BMJ)
- Stroke: Every additional 7 grams per day was associated with a 7% lower risk of a first stroke.[8] (PubMed)
- Type 2 diabetes: People eating the most fiber had a 19% lower associated risk than those eating the least.[9] (PubMed)
- Colorectal cancer: Every additional 10 grams of fiber per day was associated with about a 10% lower risk.[10] (BMJ)
- Breast cancer: Women eating the most fiber had an 8% lower associated risk than women eating the least.[11] (ACS Journals)
- Brain health: In a study of more than 41,000 adults, higher fiber intake was associated with a lower risk of disabling dementia. Compared with the lowest-fiber group, the highest-fiber group had an associated risk that was 18% lower among women and 14% lower among men. Research in this area is newer and less settled than the evidence around digestive and heart health.[12] (PubMed)
- Longevity: Every additional 10 grams of fiber per day was associated with an 11% lower risk of death from any cause during the study periods.[13] (PubMed)
One of the largest reviews of fiber research combined 185 long-term studies and 58 clinical trials. It found consistently better health outcomes among people who ate the most fiber, with the greatest overall benefits appearing around 25 to 29 grams per day.[14] (PubMed)
No single food or supplement guarantees protection from disease. But study after study points in the same direction:
Eating enough fiber is a seriously good idea.
